I had a thought the other night that came to me because I kept on asking the same thing. It’s one of those things where it’s so obvious that you are surprised it hasn’t knocked you over the head before. Or that it hasn’t knocked on anyone else’s head before.

In the beginning, man didn’t understand why the world operated as it did. In many cases, they didn’t even know the specifics of how it did operate. Things like rain, the sun, the stars and the detailed structure of the human body were all mysteries to them. To explain those mysteries, they created stories of powerful supernatural beings. How they created the world and everything in it.

When man started to advance in the sciences, they started getting more definitive answers for what were considered to be mysteries. The old gods were slowly getting debunked, but people still held on. Why? Because religion still answered one question that science never can or will. What is our purpose in life? What purpose does our existence serve?

That is the reason why people still cling to it so desperately. It is also the reason why people feel so empty when they leave a religion that they believed in previously.
